We are to carry our fellow Christians burdens
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are to help our Christian brothers and sisters who are lacking clothes and food
“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him,
‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
James 2:15-
We are to “lay down our lives for our Christian brethren” who are in need,
by helping them from our abundance
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down
our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother
in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children,
let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is
how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His
presence.” I John 3: 16-
Our Lord clearly defines one of the principle evidences of genuine faith in Him, as our willingness to help fellow Christians (His brethren) who have no food, water, clothing, shelter, or medical care.
• “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory,...All the nations will be gathered in His presence, and he will separate them as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats...Then the King will say to those on the right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
• “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ And the King will tell them, ‘I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
• “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his demons! For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me anything to drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me no clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
• “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ And he will answer,
‘I assure you, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters,
you were refusing to help me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but
the righteous will go into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-
Jesus’ principle command was for us to love “one another.”
• “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you
must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you
love one another.” John 13:34-
• “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love
has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends
if you do what I command.” John 15:12-
• “This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:17
• “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” John 17:23
• “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” John 14:21
Apostles Paul, James, and Peter, were concerned for the poor in the Body of Christ
• “Share with God’s people who are in need.” Romans 12
• “Now about the collection for God’s people: Do what I told the Galatian
churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside
a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections
will have to be made.” I Cor. 16:1-
• “All they (James, Peter and John) asked was that we should continue to remember
the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.” Galatians 2:9-
• “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of
you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing
about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if
it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:15-
The presence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is promised
to those who obey
• “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” John 14:21
• “Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23
• “We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Acts 5:32
• “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23
We should have a regular collection for God’s people”
in our prosperous American churches
Two entire chapters of the Apostle Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthians discuss the “collection” or “service” to the saints. It is too lengthy to quote in its entirety, but take a few minutes to reach for your Bible and read the importance God places on our helping the Brethren. Following are a few excerpts:
• “...they (the Macedonian Christians) urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints...Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality,...As it is written: ‘He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”
• “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people
but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service
by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies
your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with
them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out
to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you...” 2 Cor. 8:1-
Jesus did not just speak to the “rich young ruler” about selling his possessions and giving to the poor. This advice, which when followed would result in “treasure in Heaven” was also given to his followers (His “little flock”). Our Lord tells us:
"Do not be afraid little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out,
a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:32-
Jesus warned us to be on guard against all kinds of greed. The following verse could well be applied to most of us who are Christians living here in America. We would be considered “rich” compared to the plight of most Christians living in our world behind the “gates of hell” in the Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Communist nations. Although our brethren are minorities in their nations, when totaled together, our suffering brethren comprise the majority of the world Christian population. We Christians in America are the fortunate few in the Body of Christ, and we should view our prosperity as a privileged responsibility, not as an excuse to “dwell at ease in Zion.”
“Then he (Jesus) said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of
greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." And he
told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He
thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' "Then he
said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and
there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty
of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'
"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from
you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will
be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." Luke
We are blessed to live in a country where the disabled are cared for and helped in many ways by our society, but we have Christian brethren in other nations, suffering from paralysis, leprosy, blindness, and poverty due to discrimination and persecution. It would be very honoring to our Lord if we were helping these precious brethren. It would bring great blessing to us from the Lord.
Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your
friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may
invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the
poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot
repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Luke 14:12-
If you could read the letters and emails that come to our office every day, and visit with me the struggling Christians in our world, you would begin to realize that in many respects some “Christians” in America could very well find themselves at the judgment seat of Christ, in the same position as the “rich man” with a beggar (our persecuted brethren) at our gate. I don’t think we will be able to say “I did not see them there.”
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury
every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing
to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.
The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked
up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father
Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and
cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' "But Abraham replied, 'Son,
remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received
bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this,
between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from
here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' "He answered, 'Then
I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let
him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' "Abraham
replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' "'No, father
Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not
be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' " Luke 16:19-
