Text Box: The Extent Of Poverty Is Guarded Carefully From The Rest Of The World Living conditions in North Korea are not fully known, due to the government’s absolute control over information that passes in and out of the country. However, through rare glimpses from organizations working inside North Korea, and a few North Korean prisoners who have escaped, we have learned a little about the conditions for our brethren in North Korea. Although we may not know any specifics, we do know that many, many North Koreans are living in extreme and dire poverty. In 1997, a famine killed almost three million people. Because of food shortages, some North Koreans attempt to leave the country in search of food in China or South Korea. Some are successful; others are not. If they are caught attempting to leave the country, they will be killed or sent to prison. It is particularly difficult for Christians in North Korea. They are often tortured, imprisoned, and killed for their faith in Jesus Christ. For some, when caught with a Bible, or officials find out they are Christians, death comes to them by having a steam roller run over their bodies in front of spectators. In prison, Christians are given the worst, most demeaning jobs and beaten more frequently than other prisoners. The needs for our brethren in North Korea are numerous, but the greatest need is food—spiritual and physical. We partner with an organization which focuses on bringing Bibles and nutritious food to our brothers and sisters in North Korea. $100 will enable a Christian family of 4 to survive for a year.
